Improvement to the allocation of setup time across common materials

Important change to cutting price calculation

The way setup time is allocated across parts in a quote has changed.

If you don't use setup time, or if your setup mode is set to "Line item" then this does not affect you.

If you charge for setup with a mode of "Material", then please read on.

Old method of allocating setup time to unit prices

  1. Take the setup time.

    (e.g. 300 seconds)

  2. Divide it by the number of line items using the same material.

(e.g. if 2 line items, then 150 seconds goes to each line item)

  3. Divide the line item amount by the quantity quoted for that part.

(e.g. if a quantity of 5, then 30 seconds per unit. Or if a quantity of 15, then 10 seconds per unit)

New method of allocating setup time to unit prices

  1. Take the setup time.

    (e.g. 300 seconds)

  2. Multiply it by the proportion of cutting time this unit has out of the total cutting time across all parts cut on the same material.

(e.g. 3 seconds for 1 unit of a line item out of 60 seconds to cut all units across both line items cut on this material = 5%. Therefore, 15 seconds of setup time is allocated to this part).

Why has this changed?

Allocating setup time based on the proportion of cutting gives a more relevant portion of setup time to each quantity of a line item.

In particular, this improves on situations where quoting two line items that are the same geometry but mirrored, and the quantity differs between them.

What do I need to do?

Nothing. Just keep in mind that future calculations with be based on the new method, and if you recalculate an existing quote, the total quote price won't change but the allocation across parts might change.
